THE DREAM by Velvet Beach

What makes dream pop unique and cool is the way it creates a distinct mood and atmosphere that can transport listeners to a different world or state of mind. Velvet Beach is an indie band from Toronto that is turning over a new chapter not only in the indie genre, but also in the dream pop direction. And yes, Velvet Beach is one of the most promising and unique bands creating an impressive sound. Their debut album ‘The Dream’ incorporates ocean of reverb, delay, and distortion to create a dense and enveloping sound that is both immersive and soothing. The album explore themes of longing, nostalgia and introspection.

Velvet Beach have managed to disconnect me from reality and take me into their world, which at first glance is as light and airy as the album. Already in the first track ‘Reverie’ you can hear that the musicians feel each other and give each participant the opportunity to express themselves.

The second track, ‘Return’, is full of echoes and babble of voices in the background. I love how the musicians talk about difficulties in a gentle way. The track ‘Home (Is It True?)’ features exceptional vocals and the guitars tell a sensual story. In this track Velvet Beach abruptly break the rhythm and finally enchant with their sound. In my opinion, in this piece the musicians play mainly with harmonies and let the listener guess that each piece is a feeling, a situation and a thought.

In the song ‘A Sign’, the musicians let the drums come to the forefront to enhance the effect of immersion. From that moment on, the album sounds personal, like a diary of memories. My favorite is the track ‘Uncertainty’. The middle of the album really draws a certain line, after which everything does not present itself the same way as before. From now on, Velvet switches roles and brings Meagan’s soft and sensual vocals to the forefront. The second part of the album strikes a melancholic tone and subconsciously dips into thoughtfulness. It is this emotional transition that is important to me personally, and I will explain why. When we allow ourselves to make an emotional transition, we can fully embrace these positive changes and let go of any fears or anxieties that may be holding us back, and in this case, Velvet Beach’s music is a bridge to a state of peace.

The track ‘Arm’s Length’ and ‘Daylight’ continue the slow and melancholic atmosphere. The musicians mix acoustic folk with the synth pop genre to create a whole new sound. I love how the musicians add a pinch of arthouse to the track ‘Daylight’. As if emotions become so strong and uncontrollable that they can eat from the inside out. But the next track ‘Youth’ will save and heal the emotional wounds. The closer the finale of the album gets, the more I do not want ‘The Dream’ to end.

The final track ‘Somewhere Far Away’ is pure hope and redemption. The musicians have created emotional art that emphasizes the importance of feelings, whatever they may be. Anger, sadness, joy, love and grief have a place in life, even if each of these feelings is perceived through the prism of rose-colored glasses. In fact, why not? If that is what helps a person to survive and live events. For me personally, the album ‘The Dream’ is a mirror of the soul. It seems that Velvet Beach not only make light, magical music, but want to talk to the listener and tell him that sometimes it’s easier to survive traumatic events when presented in a dreamy shell.

‘The Dream’ by Velvet Beach is a sweet lullaby that transports you to another dimension, this dream pop album paints a surreal landscape with its lush soundscapes and ethereal vocals. Listening to this album, you feel like you’re floating on a cloud, as the hypnotic rhythms and dreamy textures envelop you like a warm hug. Each track feels like a vivid dream, full of whimsical imagery and introspective thoughts that invite you to lose yourself in their hypnotic spell. Whether you’re stargazing or taking a long, solitary walk in the woods, this album is the perfect soundtrack to accompany you on your journey. So close your eyes, let the Velvet’s music carry you away and immerse yourself in this dreamlike masterpiece.
