Today, I’d like to begin this review in a slightly different manner than you’re accustomed to. In this piece, I encourage you to set aside all fears, doubts, and obstacles. I invite you to question the existence of information in the world and the reality that you’re accustomed to. Our guide on this journey into the complex and unusual “alternative” theme is Shaven Primates with their new EP, titled “Birds Aren’t Real.”
The very name challenges our established reality, and the musicians themselves present an “alternative thought” that many may find intriguing. Personally, I am both intrigued and absolutely fascinated by the concept of this EP. Shaven Primates boldly tackle a variety of topics, from wars, lies, and media manipulation, including the Internet, to the struggles of individuals facing their own weaknesses and emerging victorious from life’s most difficult situations. The “Birds Aren’t Real” EP can be likened to a dystopian book, where a puppet world is controlled by those in power, and people willingly inflict pain upon themselves, leaving their loved ones to bear the burden. However, the most intriguing aspect lies in the title itself… But fear not, my friends, I’ll reveal the essence of this EP towards the end of this review, allowing you to fully experience its power and, perhaps, independently explore the “alternative truth” that lies in the recesses of your mind, even now.

Shaven Primates are true innovators and daring experimenters. They craft their own unique world, fusing elements of psychedelic rock with intricate and complex rhythmic structures. The tracks on the EP venture into a diverse array of heavy genres, ranging from 80’s psychedelic rock infused with synthesizers, to the raw and gritty styles of grunge and gothic grotesque. They skillfully navigate through rock classics, incorporating powerful vocals and infusing them with blues overtones. With this rich blend of influences, we embark on a journey into the profound depths of the “alternative thought” that Shaven Primates present in their new EP.
The first track, “Fade Away,” sets a gloomy tone from the start with low, muffled drums. Immersed in effects, the guitars create a mesmerizing dance, while powerful, slightly hoarse vocals add an ominous touch. The tension gradually builds, leading to a bright and uplifting melody that climaxes like an erupting volcano, completely absorbing the listener. The song skillfully blends retro 70s sounds with modern influences, hinted at through light bells and keyboards. The strong psychedelic sound effectively captures the mood, strength, and depth of the theme, forming an incredible and immersive experience for the listener.

Immersing oneself completely in the powerful sound, the slow and haunting melody of the track “A Decision” envelops the mind. The experimental vocals are infused with both pain and strength, evident in every single note. This track resonates like an anthem dedicated to loss and suffering. The emotions run high, and the magnitude of the experience is fully conveyed through the inclusion of a ghostly choir. The musicians skillfully emphasize the anguish of those left behind after a tragic suicide, and the impact is profound. The guitar solos, in particular, are a remarkable display of raw emotion; they evoke screams and cries, delivering a truly powerful performance that tugs at the heartstrings. The combination of these elements creates a truly unforgettable experience.

“Silicon Implants” is a dynamic blend of emotions, fusing grunge, punk, and psychedelic rock. Each instrument shines, drawing listeners into a rhythmic world of improvisation. While the intensity can be dizzying, the track’s intent is to expose absurd war pretexts and manipulative motives that govern the world. Moving to “Unmasked,” it starts tenderly and melancholic, capturing the essence of a vulnerable protagonist amidst distressing events, facing peer and adult oppression. The track eloquently portrays the struggle towards self-acceptance, with gentle piano and delicate vocals. Both tracks intertwine emotions and musical elements, showcasing Shaven Primates’ artistic depth. The final track, “Birds Aren’t Real,” concludes the EP on a powerful and distinctive note. It carries a downbeat and unconventional tone, with vocals that seem to emanate from somewhere beyond, soaring on a blazing fusion of instruments. The dynamic and engaging rhythm, combined with the striking guitar work, solidifies this track as my personal favorite. It’s an experience of sheer madness, in the best possible way!
Now, I’ll let you in on a secret! “Birds Aren’t Real” challenges our perception. Have you ever considered the possibility that birds might not be what they seem? Shaven Primates invite you to ponder this idea at your own pace, and you know what? There might just be something intriguing about it! The notion that birds were created by the government to surveil the population sparks thought-provoking questions and leaves a lasting impression. With this unique and thought-provoking EP, Shaven Primates once again demonstrate their ability to push boundaries and provoke contemplation through their music. It’s a captivating way to conclude “Birds Aren’t Real”, leaving listeners with lingering thoughts and a sense of wonder.
