IB: Hello Tommy! It’s great to be talking with you here on Indie Boulevard. Let’s discuss how the idea for “Captain Fantastic Adventures” came about. What inspired you to launch this exciting project, and what sets this show apart from other children’s entertainment programs?
TOMMY: Thank you for having me on Indie Boulevard. The journey of “Captain Fantastic Adventures” has been both thrilling and rewarding. My journey began in 2010 when I founded Captain Fantastic. At that time, I was grappling with the unpredictability of an actor’s life. Yet, I realised I had a natural flair for making children laugh – it’s as if we’re on the same wavelength! From its humble beginnings at my kitchen table, Captain Fantastic has blossomed, now boasting a dedicated team of six full-time staff members, 40 entertainers, and 11 franchises. This growth has solidified our reputation as one of the UK’s largest children’s entertainment companies.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, when the world felt unpredictable, we provided children with free content as a comforting anchor. Surprisingly, these offerings drew over 3 million views, hinting at a deeper demand. Motivated by this, our YouTube show, “Captain Fantastic Adventures”, was conceived. What sets “Captain Fantastic Adventures” apart is our unique blend of humor that appeals to both children and adults. We pride ourselves on creating content that’s not just fun and engaging but also educational. Furthermore, we love to showcase fantastic family day-out opportunities, giving parents and children ideas for their own adventures.
IB: Tell us about your character in the series. What do you enjoy doing the most with the kids during their adventures?
TOMMY: Captain Fantastic is the heart and soul of our series, embodying the boundless enthusiasm and curiosity of a child. He’s a delightful superhero whose superpower isn’t about flying or strength, but about spreading joy and fun everywhere he goes. He’s essentially the lens through which children view our adventures, making them instantly relatable and engaging. Dr. Zob, with his penchant for mischief, occasionally steps into the villain’s shoes, introducing an element of playful chaos to our narratives, keeping our young audience on their toes. Pirate Polly, with her fierce competitiveness, often steals the spotlight. While her unyielding determination sometimes overshadows her better judgment, her journeys, marked by lessons in humility, are always a joy to follow. Princess Aria might seem all about the regal airs initially.
However, delve deeper, and you find a spirited character full of wit and charm, challenging any preconceived notions one might hold about royalty. These characters have been at the heart of our most beloved party themes for a decade. Their inclusion in the series is a nod to their lasting appeal, ensuring a sense of nostalgia and connection for those who’ve celebrated special occasions with them. Incorporating my own children into select episodes serves as a special blend of our personal family stories with the broader narrative, infusing the series with a deeper, more intimate touch.
IB: What were the most thrilling moments during the filming of the series? Can you share any amusing stories?
TOMMY: One particularly exhilarating moment was during our BMX episode. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that BMXing was entirely out of my comfort zone. The course started atop a significant incline to generate speed, leading directly into a jump. I had a brief lesson beforehand, but the real challenge was mustering the courage to actually do it. Determined not to let my nerves show, I dove in headfirst, probably pushing myself harder than I should have. The rush of adrenaline combined with that fear of the unknown created a moment that was both terrifying and utterly exhilarating. We’ve tackled various challenges during the filming, from high-altitude climbing and navigating a water wipeout course to mastering the art of skateboarding. But there was something uniquely intimidating about that BMX jump. Maybe it was the immediate transition from learning to executing or just the sheer drop that awaited. But when I felt those butterflies – a mixture of anticipation, excitement, and sheer terror – I knew it was going to be a moment to remember.

IB: Your team has visited many incredible places as part of the series. Is there a specific place that left the greatest impression on you and your team, and why?
TOMMY: Throughout our adventures on “Captain Fantastic Adventures,” we’ve had the privilege to explore some truly captivating locations. Each place offers its own unique charm and learning experiences. One standout experience was our trip on the “Horrible History Terrible Thames.” Sailing along the Thames in London and being immersed in its rich history was both enlightening and entertaining. Witnessing the iconic landmarks while absorbing the gruesomely fascinating tales of London’s past was a treat for both the mind and the eyes.
On the other hand, I have a personal soft spot for locations that challenge us physically. Tuff Nutterz, Europe’s largest inflatable course, was a crazy maze of bouncy obstacles, testing our agility and endurance. Likewise, Jump In, with its expansive trampoline park and daunting high climbs, brought out the adrenaline junkie in me. And then there’s the sheer indulgence of crafting delectable treats at Dr. Choc’s Chocolate Factory. The process of making chocolate, combined with the irresistible aroma, was pure joy! Honestly, it’s a challenge to pinpoint just one favorite. Every location has etched memorable moments in our hearts, and each episode brings with it a unique flavor and excitement.
IB: “Captain Fantastic Adventures” is filled with fun and educational moments. What personal values or lessons do you hope to convey to young viewers through this project?
TOMMY: “Captain Fantastic Adventures” is more than just a source of entertainment; it’s a platform that blends fun with educational moments. At the core of our narrative in each episode is a nuanced, purposeful lesson. These range from the importance of sharing and understanding one’s emotions to the intricacies of Special Educational Needs (SEN) learning. By integrating these lessons seamlessly into our stories, we aim for children to internalize these values naturally, making them resonate more deeply.
An aspect we’re particularly enthusiastic about is our initiative to align our content with PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education. To enhance this, we’re in the process of crafting workshops that complement some of our episodes. These resources will provide schools with additional tools to enrich their PSHE curriculum, promoting a more comprehensive educational experience. In essence, our vision for “Captain Fantastic Adventures” is twofold: to captivate young minds with thrilling tales and to instill in them invaluable life lessons that will contribute to their personal and emotional growth.
IB: What qualities do you believe make Captain Fantastic particularly popular among children and their parents?
TOMMY: The widespread appeal of Captain Fantastic among children and their parents lies in a harmonious blend of factors. At the heart of it all is Captain Fantastic’s innate relatability. He encapsulates the curiosity, enthusiasm, and wonder of childhood, acting as a trusted guide for our young viewers, leading them through adventures that mirror their daily dreams and imaginings. Our vast experience in entertaining children has provided us with invaluable insights. By hosting thousands of children’s parties each year, we’ve developed a keen understanding of what truly captivates young minds.
Furthermore, the moral undertones in our episodes resonate with parents. We hope they will appreciate that while their children are entertained, they’re also imbibing values and lessons that contribute to their personal growth. This dual appeal – fun for children and value-driven content for parents – creates a win-win scenario, setting Captain Fantastic apart. By merging the magic of entertainment with the essence of real-life lessons, Captain Fantastic has become more than just a show; it’s a trusted companion for children and a reassuring choice for parents.

IB: How long did it take to prepare for the launch of this series, and what was the most challenging part of the process?
TOMMY: The journey to launching “Captain Fantastic Adventures” was both rigorous and rewarding. We began filming a good six months prior to the series debut. This foresight was essential, as our objective was to ensure we had a robust cache of content, allowing us to release a fresh episode every week for an entire year. One might think that with such a timeline, our episodes are scripted down to the last detail. In reality, the process is more organic. Once we decide on a location, there’s a brief planning session centered around the theme and narrative we aim to explore, taking into consideration the unique facilities and features of the chosen venue. From there, the magic truly begins, with a significant portion of the episode evolving through improvisation on the day of filming.
This method, while exciting, also presented our most significant challenge. Improvisation requires a blend of quick thinking, adaptability, and genuine reactions to the environment and unfolding storyline. It’s a delicate dance between sticking to the core idea while allowing spontaneous moments to shape the narrative. The unpredictability of this approach often kept us on our toes. But, as with any art form that leans heavily on spontaneity, it demanded a high level of trust and synergy among the cast and crew.
IB: I know that the series started airing in September 2023. What can we expect in the future? Are there any new adventures or projects you can tell us about?
TOMMY: With the festive season around the corner, we’re currently in discussions with some exceptional Christmas venues. While I don’t want to give too much away, I can assure you that our upcoming holiday-themed episodes promise to be filled with magic, wonder, and the signature Captain Fantastic fun. We hope to finalize the details very shortly, so stay tuned for some festive treats!
But the adventures don’t stop there. My personal calendar is packed with exciting activities, and I’m particularly thrilled about my upcoming visit to a gymnastics facility next week. The blend of athleticism, grace, and discipline inherent in gymnastics promises to offer a unique backdrop for our episode. Following that, we’ll be swinging into the treetops with an exhilarating trip to Go Ape. All in all, the future of “Captain Fantastic Adventures” promises a continuous stream of fun, learning, and exploration. We’re on a mission to keep our audience both entertained and inspired, and we have an array of exciting ventures lined up to ensure just that!

IB: If you could invite anyone (a celebrity or not) for a guest appearance on “Captain Fantastic Adventures,” who would it be, and what kind of adventure would you offer them?
TOMMY: The idea of having a guest appearance on “Captain Fantastic Adventures” is always intriguing, especially when it can bridge fanbases and offer something fresh to our viewers. If I had the opportunity, I’d be thrilled to collaborate with either Blippi or Mr. Tumble. Both are iconic figures in children’s entertainment with a dedicated following. The dynamic between Captain Fantastic and either of these personalities could create a memorable episode that fans from both sides would cherish.
Imagine this: An episode set against the backdrop of a bustling theme park. As the day progresses, Captain Fantastic, along with Blippi or Mr. Tumble, explore various rides and attractions, captivating kids as they go. As the climax approaches, they both stand before the park’s most daunting attraction – the biggest roller coaster. Despite their apprehensions, together they muster the courage to face their fears, demonstrating to young viewers the values of bravery, support, and friendship. Not only would this be a memorable experience for our special guest and Captain Fantastic, but it would also be a heartfelt lesson for the children watching. Conquering fears, especially with a trusted friend by your side, is a timeless lesson we’d love to portray.
IB: How do you envision the future of children’s entertainment content? What new ideas and themes do you find most exciting for future projects?
TOMMY: When I contemplate the future of children’s entertainment content, I see it evolving at the confluence of groundbreaking technology and the timeless essence of human connections. Our world is rapidly digitizing, expanding the horizons of how we can narrate stories and share experiences, which I find tremendously exciting. For instance, I’m currently working on a Halloween show where I’m integrating a novel concept: using a TV screen as a dynamic portal, enabling interaction with characters in diverse locations. This showcases how technology can be woven seamlessly into storytelling, creating a richer and more immersive experience for young viewers. And with advancements in augmented and virtual reality, the possibilities are even more profound.
Yet, as we venture deeper into this digital age, I firmly believe in the paramount importance of grounding our content in real, tangible emotions and experiences. Today’s generation, though tech-savvy, should never lose touch with the real-world interactions that form the crux of human relationships. In all my endeavors, my aim remains consistent: to weave narratives that foster genuine bonds and bring families closer. Even as we harness the myriad tools technology offers, the stories we craft should always resonate with themes of love, togetherness, and cherished memories. After all, the core message of our company has always been about creating magical moments for families, and I’m committed to ensuring that this sentiment always shines through, no matter how our storytelling mediums evolve.
