Alison’s musical prowess is evident in the seamless blend of anticipation and momentum that characterizes “Light.” With this single, Alison invites audiences to embrace the inherent strength within, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-discovery.
Arranging to meet Alison at the mall turned out to be a pleasant surprise in our busy lives. It was a spontaneous idea that arose during our informal correspondence when discussing the possibility of sharing impressions about her new single. Among the many suggestions for a meeting place, the mall stood out as a convenient and attractive location, where business discussions could be combined with a leisurely immersion in the atmosphere of shopping and new ideas. Alison, like her music, proved to be exceptionally deep and philosophical. Our meeting at the mall was like a relay race where brands and fashion competed for attention, and her presence was a bright chord in this colorful ocean of styles. She was very cheerful and charming. Amidst the multitude of branded items and clothing, her aura stood out, like a melody bringing the space to life. In this world of fashion and commerce, we found a secluded inlet of time to discuss something more elevated – her new single “Light.” Gathering in a corner where fabrics rustled and the aromas of novelty intertwined, we began to discuss the world created by her music.

Hi Alison, thank you for taking the time to talk with me, and I’ll start by congratulating you on the release of your new single. What reaction do you expect from listeners when they first hear ‘Light’? Is there something specific you want them to feel or understand?
Thank you so much for speaking with me! “Light” is an introspective song within a sort of dreamy landscape. I hope that listeners can become invested in that world whether they relate to the lyrics or are along for the journey of the story.
Please share a moment or experience that inspired you to create ‘Light’. Was it a moment of clarity or something more complex?
More-so than a specific experience, I was inspired by the way I’ve evolved over the past few years, and had been wanting to write about it. I began looking inward and learned more about the way I think, and it has helped me grow as a person and understand myself more.
How do you see music, including ‘Light’, serving as a means of self-expression and emotional support for listeners in their own lives?
To me, music is the most special thing there is. Capturing experience and emotion through both auditory and lyrical form, and its ability to resonate with and inspire others is beautiful. I hope listeners takeaway whatever they feel they need from the song, whether it be looking inward, appreciating the little things, or even if they’re just there for the vibes!
I noticed that ‘Light’ has a certain visual quality in its musical texture. How do you visualize your songs when working on them? Are there any images or scenes that come to mind?
I start out a lot of songs as ballads imagining they’ll be completed in that texture, but often seem to build up from those initial ideas. I originally pictured this song as a piano ballad, but began building more and knew I had to add bass synths. I love to create slow-burn songs with bass synths to add intensity and give the song a wider, crunchy sound. I definitely wanted the final chorus to be grand, and added a lot of different layers to make it into a big wave of sounds. As a whole and even from the initial piano chords, I saw this song within a type of dreamy landscape.
What do you consider the key element in creating a song? Its message, or how captivating the melody is?
I love music both for its ability to capture feeling in auditory form, and for its ability to express ideas through words. To me both are important factors in creating a great song, and either could be a key factor depending on the end goal or the way it’s implemented!
Your voice and lyrics in ‘Light’ sound very sincere. How do you approach conveying emotional depth in your performance?
I pretty much went off my intuition when deciding how I wanted to go about the vocals – I knew I wanted the first verse to sound a bit softer and calmer, and for the second verse, I wanted to sing more with a more forward-driven sound. When I revisit the first verse after the bridge, I wanted to sing it very softly as it’s intended to be a moment of peace, clarity, and understanding.

When I listen to the culmination of ‘Light,’ I feel like it’s a release from all burdens, as if you’re flying on the wings of music. Do you remember the moment when this melody came to your mind?
For this song, the chord progressions preceded the vocal melody. I usually start my songs with verse melodies before thinking of exactly what I want to do for the chorus, so the verse came a lot more easily to me. It took a bit more time to figure out the chorus melody, though once it came together it felt right. A fun fact is those soft piano notes that appear in the bridge and at the end are very special to me. Those to me sound what clarity feels like, and that’s what they represent in the song. I came up with them while on the phone with my friend and was very excited about it!
Many of your fans say that your music has a therapeutic effect. How do you feel about this idea? Is it intentional on your part?
I always write about what I naturally feel drawn to expressing, and I think if it has the ability to connect, resonate with, and inspire anyone, it truly warms my heart. As people, we share many similar experiences and hearing someone sing about something similar to you can be an amazing experience.
How do you decide what constitutes a ‘successful’ song for you? Are there any specific criteria, or is it more of a feeling?
To me, each song that I choose to complete is successful! Every song has its own purpose – lyrically, melodically, structurally, and once I finish a song, I finish it knowing I created it for its exact purpose. Not to say any of my songs that I started and didn’t finish are unsuccessful, more-so if I’m finishing a song, I wouldn’t finish it if I didn’t think it was becoming what it was supposed to be.
Imagine if ‘Light’ were a scent or taste. What would it be, and why?
I love this question! It would be a sweet scent for sure – kind of velvety, and a candy taste – those are what would come to mind!
