Reality Reversed: Painted Friends Drop Their Second Masterpiece, ‘Gomnia: Volume 2 (Indimindi)’

After releasing the first album “Gomnia: Volume 1 (Insula & Hyber)” in 2021, Painted Friends embarked on creating the second part, on which they worked for several years. And now, today, on April 12th, the album “Gomnia: Volume 2 (Indimindi)” is available on all digital platforms. With this release, they engage the listener in a candid dialogue, turning reality inside out. Consisting of 10 tracks, each intricately linked, the album weaves a cohesive narrative. It’s undeniably one of the most intimate and transparent records in recent memory.

As Painted Friends confessed in a recent interview, “It introduces part of the narrative of Volume 2, which is about admitting humanity has a problem of jealousy, hatred, lack of self-control, etc. I want to emphasize that the album as a whole isn’t dark like Cain Complex is. Eventually, it resolves to finding joy.” And indeed it does. Released today, on April 12th, this album invites each of us to resonate with its message. While it speaks to the world at large, personally, it feels like a deeply intimate conversation, as if it’s directed at every individual on the planet.

This sentiment permeates from the first track to the last. Drawing parallels between “Gomnia: Volume 1 (Insula & Hyber)” and “Gomnia: Volume 2 (Indimindi)”, the sonic similarities are striking, yet they complement each other seamlessly. However, while Insula & Hyber delved deep into philosophical musings, Indimindi’s straightforwardness sets it apart entirely. This stark contrast between the two albums is monumental.

The new album boasts breathtaking songs, at times triumphant, at times serene, occasionally revolutionary, and sometimes exceptionally lyrical. These twists and turns blend seamlessly with Jeremiah McWhorter’s truly versatile vocals. The production and sound quality of the album are top-notch – it’s hard to imagine raising the bar any higher in this regard. With subtle synth shifts and delicate guitar melodies, the first track, “Better Bones,” sets the tone. Classic violins, an infectious rhythm, and flawless vocals immediately raise the bar for the entire album. Painted Friends kick off with a bold and powerful track, instantly establishing the album’s theme. I love that the guys dive right in with such a grandiose opener. Then, in “What Moves You,” the light keys and the track’s powerful buildup offer an utterly stunning sound. Filled with sensuous synth elements and the sincerity of commercial vocals, “Cain Complex” with its lightly experimental structure sounds both innovative and captivating.

After the vibrant start, the album’s midsection sees the groovy sound giving way to a light pop-rock haze with bright commercial hooks. Tracks like “My Heart, Your Love” and “Indimindi” effortlessly capture the heart with their lightness, tenderness, absolute openness, and sincerity. Continuing with the tenderness, seemingly stepping away from a sequence of pain and lies towards joy, acceptance, and light, the second part of the album is undoubtedly brighter and airier. “Love and See” exudes a wonderfully light and summery vibe, one that you want to prolong and experience with all your soul. Painted Friends seem to beckon us to be as open to the world and truth as they are.

The album draws to a close with tracks like “Give” and “The 25-Year Door.” Soft keys, soulful vocals, gentle rhythms, and unique guitars create an atmosphere that sends shivers down your spine, yet the track maintains its commercial and stylish edge. I love how listening to it leaves a sense of tranquility in your soul. The album concludes with the short track “The 25-Year Door,” dominated by warm, natural sounds. This distinct sound sets the track apart, offering a captivating conclusion to the album. Painted Friends leave an ellipsis after the end, prompting you to hit play again and listen once more.

The album’s title itself, “Gomnia: Volume 2 (Indimindi),” highlights its sincerity and honesty. Painted Friends, in absolute harmony, create music where there’s no room for ambiguity. Combining Volume 1 and Volume 2 into one creates something truly grandiose, yet distinctively different. It’s like the pieces of a puzzle fitting together seamlessly, forming a bigger picture that’s both familiar and entirely new. The second part feels like a mirror image, reflecting and reframing the themes explored in the first part, adding depth and complexity to the overall narrative. It’s a remarkable journey that Painted Friends take us on, and it’s one that’s worth experiencing in its entirety.

I highly recommend giving the album a listen, you’ll feel how Painted Friends truly become your companions through their music. It’s stunning!
