Can We Hear the Muses Sing? “Teleion” by Lopez & Arevalos Reconstructs the Sounds of a Lost Civilization

Ancient Greece, often regarded as the cradle of Western civilization, left behind a significant cultural legacy that includes music. The musical art of Greece was intricately intertwined with poetic works and rituals, where each sound carried its own unique ritualistic meaning. Recreating the atmosphere and music of Ancient Greece within today’s cultural paradigm represents a creative challenge and a unique opportunity for synthesizing different times and cultures. On one hand, we have the rich legacy of antiquity with its myths, poetry, and musical traditions. On the other hand, there are advanced technologies and new artistic trends that allow ancient ideas to be realized in unexpected formats.

Taking on such a complex, seemingly daunting process are Camilla Lopez (singer) and Matteo Ramon Arevalos (pianist and composer). Using the ancient heritage as their foundation, Lopez & Arevalos have created the album “Teleion,” released under the guidance of Tunitemusic. This enchanting record is inspired by Ancient Greek poetry, mythology, music, discovered manuscripts, and adorned with a modern sound.

Reproducing ancient Greek music requires a deep understanding of both historical contexts and the musical techniques of that time, a challenge that Lopez & Arevalos have successfully undertaken. Using modern technologies, Lopez & Arevalos recreate the sound of ancient melodies, making ancient music accessible and understandable to modern listeners.

In the album “Teleion,” there are 12 compositions, and each of these songs respectfully and admirably resurrects forgotten melodies, embodying true ancient Greek epic. From the dramatic and almost divine vocals in the opening track “Orestes (408 BC),” they bring to life the eponymous tragedy by the ancient Greek poet Euripides, written in 408 BC. From the first composition, the depth of the album is palpable, promising further surprises with its sophistication and emotive delivery. I particularly enjoy the mystery found in the song “Hymn to Nemesis (1st century AD).” By invoking the goddess of retribution, Nemesis, through ethnic instruments and the virtuoso vocals of Lopez, complemented by Arevalos’ skilled piano playing, they achieve a true marvel, capturing the era in all its splendor.

Raising questions of justice, destiny, and the fragility of the world, “Teleion” leads a succession of reflections on fundamental issues. Lopez & Arevalos’ remarkable ability to address familiar themes through ancient Greek music makes the album exceptionally unique. The atmosphere intensifies almost tangibly in “Papyrus of Vienna G29825 (3rd century BC),” thanks to Arevalos’ emotionally charged performance. The sound unfolds with renewed strength and tragic depth. Lopez & Arevalos feel their stories deeply and infuse each track with their own emotions.

Camilla Lopez’s acapella performance in “Papyrus of Oslo 1413 (1st century AD)” is absolutely stunning. This composition seems to divide time into before and after. Lopez’s sacred and magical rendition immediately captivates the mind, it literally induces a light trance-like state. The album unfolds like a blossoming flower, and following Lopez’s voice through ancient stories allows one to feel the full beauty and power of “Teleion.””Epitaph of Seikilos (200 AD)” evokes a sense of consolation. Its softness, smoothness, and the elongation of sounds allow one to forget about haste and busyness, encouraging introspection. Resembling a prayer, “Epitaph of Seikilos (200 AD)” is my favorite song on the album.

“Papyrus of Berlin 6870 (230 BC)” sounds like a ritual, adding a touch of mystery. Its steady rhythm and minimalist sound create a hypnotic effect. This composition is one of the most enigmatic and profound, resurrecting fragments of history, ancient ritual practices, and incantations.

The album concludes with “Hymn to the Sun (1st century AD).” Bright and rhythmic, it invites swaying to its beat and enjoying its sensual performance. Addressing the Sun god, this track excellently wraps up the album, leaving a pleasant feeling of inspiration, positivity, and contemplation. I can’t add anything more than to call this album flawless!

Recreating the atmosphere and music of Ancient Greece in the modern world exemplifies how historical art can be preserved and revived in new forms and contexts. This allows contemporary listeners to feel connected to the era of ancient philosophers and poets, to engage with texts from manuscripts, and to see how ancient ideas can resonate in modern cultural reality. The album “Teleion” by Lopez & Arevalos proves that the classical heritage continues to inspire, educate, and connect people across the ages, affirming its everlasting value and relevance.

“Teleion” is a true rarity. Its uniqueness makes it one of the finest musical works of 2024. It is a gem in the world of music that should be cherished and passed down from generation to generation. Highly recommended.
