Dom Malin from the Midlands continues to delight us with songs that convey a full range of emotions. This time, however, he decided to step away from his usual folk style and try something new—indie rock. His new single “Keep Out The Rain” is a real burst of positivity, built on Malin’s guitar with the addition of energetic drums and bass. According to Dom, this song is about the importance of protecting our relationships from life’s storms.
Talking with Dom about his music and new single was a true pleasure. We discussed his journey, and how he managed to bring a fresh breeze into his creativity. Dom was surprisingly candid; he clearly relished talking about music and everything associated with it. His eyes lit up every time he recalled melodies, talked about inspiration, and his passion was contagious, making it clear to me that music was his true calling.

Reflecting on ‘Keep Out The Rain,’ you mentioned that the song was influenced by your experiences on tour. Could you share a specific moment or encounter during your tour that directly inspired a lyric or theme in this song?
As a person who often keeps their emotions inside, I channel these feelings into my music. This song represents a journey through misunderstandings, hurtful words, and difficulties communicating effectively in a close relationship. While on tour, working so closely with someone can test your patience, but it also helps to strengthen your bond. I was midway through a month-long tour, and the peaceful setting of Bad Berleburg offered the perfect environment for this moment of reflection. Music serves as my outlet for these internalised emotions, and this song encourages openness in sharing thoughts and building relationships founded on trust and love.
In your own words, how does ‘Keep Out The Rain’ compare to your previous works in terms of lyrical complexity and the emotions it seeks to express?
I believe that defining great lyrics and good music is inherently subjective, with everyone having their own perspective. I’ve always aimed for consistency in my vocabulary and descriptions when writing, maintaining high standards with each release. I strive to elevate what has come before, whether musically or lyrically. In “Keep Out the Rain,” I focused on creating a methodical lyrical structure with more nuanced language. I wanted to avoid being explicit, allowing the song to be interpreted differently by each listener. By keeping the lyrics less direct, “Keep Out the Rain” can take on a unique meaning for everyone. The themes of overcoming adversity and finding strength are central to “Keep Out the Rain,” contrasting with the themes of loss and longing that characterised my earlier work. I feel that my songwriting has matured with this track, influenced by personal experiences and a desire to explore new emotional depths.
How has your understanding of love changed over the years, and how is this evolution reflected in ‘Keep Out The Rain’?
Over the years, my understanding of love has evolved significantly. In my earlier years, I saw love primarily as a source of intense emotions, focusing on the highs of romance and the lows of heartbreak. This perspective was reflected in my early songs, which often explored passionate but tumultuous relationships. As I’ve grown and experienced more, my view of love has deepened. I now see love as a complex journey that involves navigating misunderstandings, hurtful words, and the struggle to communicate effectively. Love is not just about passion but also about working through difficulties and growing together. In “Keep Out the Rain,” I wanted to convey that love involves resilience and the willingness to overcome challenges together. The symbolism of “building a roof” underscores the idea of actively working to improve and protect the relationship, reflecting my evolved perspective on love.
‘Keep Out The Rain’ discusses the push and pull in relationships—was there a particular musical influence or artist you listened to that helped you capture this dynamic in the song?
Two artists that particularly inspired me were Bruce Springsteen and Sam Fender. Their ability to convey complex emotional struggles through both their lyrics and musical arrangements really resonated with me. Bruce Springsteen’s storytelling prowess and his knack for exploring the intricacies of human relationships influenced the lyrical approach in “Keep Out the Rain.” His songs often balance a sense of struggle with hope, which I aimed to emulate. Similarly, Sam Fender’s raw and emotive style, combined with his indie rock sound, provided a blueprint for achieving the harmonic content in the production I was aiming for. These influences helped shape the sound during production while staying true to my folk roots.

The interplay of emotions is a consistent theme in your music. How do you decide which natural elements to use as metaphors in your songs, and is there one that you find yourself returning to more frequently than others?
When deciding which natural elements to use, I consider the emotional landscape of the song and which imagery will best capture the feelings I want to convey. I frequently find myself returning to water. Water, in its various forms—rain, rivers, oceans—can represent a range of emotions from turmoil and chaos to tranquillity and renewal. It’s a versatile metaphor that resonates deeply with the themes of change, resilience, and emotional depth in my music.
Using these metaphors helps to create a more immersive and emotionally engaging experience for the listener. It allows the audience to connect with the music on a sensory level, making the emotions more tangible. Many listeners have shared that these natural metaphors help them visualise and experience emotions more intensely, which is precisely what I aim for in my songwriting.
With a global fanbase reaching from Chile to Europe, what have been some of the most surprising or touching feedback you’ve received from international listeners?
I’m fortunate to receive deeply touching feedback from fans around the world. For instance, a listener in Chile shared that my songs have helped them through a tough time and provided them with comfort and hope. Another fan in Europe told me that my music helped them learn English and find a strong emotional connection with themes of resilience and personal growth.
Hearing how my songs support and resonate with listeners in such personal ways is incredibly meaningful. It reinforces my belief in the universal power of music and inspires me to continue exploring themes that connect deeply with people, no matter where they are from.
You tour extensively, including in Germany and the Netherlands. Are there any unique traditions or rituals that you follow before going on stage?
Before going on stage, I have a few traditions and rituals to ensure I’m prepared. One important aspect is maintaining my vocal health, so I always do a series of warm-up exercises. This helps me keep my voice in top condition and ensures that I can deliver my best performance. Additionally, I often take a few moments to meditate and centre myself before stepping out, which helps me focus and calm any pre-show nerves. These routines are crucial in setting the right tone for my performance and ensuring that I connect with the audience effectively.
What are the upcoming concerts planned for this summer and autumn?
For the upcoming months, I have several exciting events planned:
- TikTok Live Takeover on August 8th
- Washington State Wine Tour from September to October
- Twitch Performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays
I’m looking forward to connecting with fans through these various platforms and events.
Music has always held a special place in your life, from childhood to the present. Is there a song or musical moment that you consider decisive in your decision to become a musician?
Growing up, music was a constant presence, from rushing home to watch the latest MTV music videos as a teenager to sharing music with friends. I was also greatly inspired by Damien Rice’s live performance at Glastonbury, which showcased the raw, emotional power of music. Additionally, moments like hearing “Hey There Delilah” in the middle of an art class were significant, as they illustrated how music could resonate and evoke strong emotions in unexpected settings.
Aside from music, do you have any hobbies or interests that might surprise your fans?
Absolutely! Tennis is a favourite of mine for its blend of strategy and physical challenge, which keeps me active and sharp. Cooking is another passion—experimenting with new recipes and cuisines let me unwind creatively, and sharing meals with loved ones is always rewarding. I’m also passionate about skiing; the thrill of the slopes is exhilarating. Lastly, hiking offers a refreshing break from routine, allowing me to recharge and find fresh inspiration for my music amid nature’s beauty.
