Jessica Woodlee has been active on the music scene for nearly eight years, and each of her new albums is a revelation. Her latest release, “JESS,” which dropped today, August 16th, and is now available on all platforms, rightfully deserves special attention. The album’s title is brief and concise, but behind this modest word lies a profound personal journey. All 13 tracks on the album delve into the complexities of the human experience, alternating between energetic punk rock and soulful piano ballads. The record spans a significant period in Woodlee’s life, from youthful romantic experiences to deep reflections on self-discovery in a world that seems to be constantly speeding up.

From the very first chords of the album, you can hear how Jessica plays with sound like an artist with a palette, creating intricate arrangements that soar to euphoria and then descend into introspective notes. The lyrics of “JESS” are deeply moving, and through them, Jessica reflects on emotional highs and lows, hopes, and doubts. Themes of self-identity, the search for meaning, and finding one’s place in this world resonate strongly in today’s climate, making the album truly timely.
The album opens with “T.O.M.L.” and immediately throws you into a world of contemporary challenges and emotions that everyone can relate to. This is a very personal beginning—thoughts and fears are laid bare, yet they sound as if saying to you, “Hey, don’t be afraid, speak your mind.” The sharp pop-punk rock, combined with Woodlee’s flawless vocals, bursts into your consciousness and sets the tone for a full immersion in the music. The energy and perfection of “T.O.M.L.” promise that things will only get better from here.
I’m especially thrilled by how in “Dairy Aisle” and “Whiskey,” airy dreams intertwine with a rock-infused energy. “Dairy Aisle” is a tender, delicate reflection that leaves a warm aftertaste. The beat here really grooves, the guitars envelop you, and Jessica’s light voice hovers over it all, creating a romantic sound that adds a unique dynamic to the album. In this album, Jessica Woodlee is clearly riding a wave of new emotions and thoughts that many in their twenties can relate to. “Whiskey” continues the light pop vibe but with an interesting play on structure and gentle synth pads. The lyrics are absolutely fire! They emphasize the importance of every event and stage in life through vivid phrases and memorable metaphors. Simply stunning!
The soft keys in “Everything & Nothing” and Jessica Woodlee’s flawless vocals create a true gem in the piano ballad genre. This performance is so delicate and accessible that it can easily stir up a whirlwind of emotions—from warm, late-night daydreams to tears on your pillow. In the middle of the album, we’re treated to the summery “Has Been,” with its vibrant arrangement and brilliant melodic development. The rich, textured sound creates a spacious sonic landscape, while Jessica’s vocals soar high and then gently float over it all, creating an atmosphere you won’t want to leave.
With “Skinny Dipping,” the fiery college rock vibe returns. The punchy drums make you want to move, and her vocals, infused with passion and energy, practically set the atmosphere ablaze. “Skinny Dipping” could easily be the track that ignites any party. The perfectly crafted structure of the song keeps your attention from start to finish, impressing with its brightness and style.
In “Placebo,” Woodlee’s light jazz vocals and stylish electric guitar instantly shift the mood, adding a touch of sensuality to the track. Her soulful performance reveals a new facet of her talent. Jessica shows that she can master any genre, and in each one, she feels right at home.
The album concludes with “Breathe Again (Hope)”—a flawless pop composition that sounds like a ready-made radio hit, one you could listen to on repeat for hours. I especially love how the light synth keys give the track a sense of flight. It’s a bright ending to the album, leaving you wanting to hear even more of such unique and stylish music.
“JESS” by Jessica Woodlee shifts styles and moods as effortlessly as a chameleon changes color, reflecting the ever-changing desires and events in the lives of twenty-somethings. This fleetingness, this search for self and place in the world, is beautifully captured in every track on “JESS.” You can play it at any time of day, and it will always leave you with the most pleasant impressions. This album is a true gem, one I absolutely recommend to anyone looking to dive into a world of quality, multifaceted music.
