The Swedish duo sixten, comprised of siblings Tova and Sigge Strandell, has something intriguing for you. Their much-awaited second EP, “Misemotional,” is precisely the blend of nostalgia and modernity that can transport you back to the days when country pop was still the king of dance floors, not just a memory.

Let’s recall where it all began. In 2016, sixten burst onto the scene with their debut single, “Chance Of Rain.” Their tender, melodic sound immediately resonated with listeners, and their polished vocal harmonies and thoughtful arrangements quickly made them favorites on the Swedish indie scene. Several years have passed since then, and during that time, they have amassed a loyal fan base that continues to grow rapidly. And now, in 2024, they are ready to captivate our attention once again with a new release that has already earned a spot on the playlists of many music lovers.
“Misemotional” is a unique ode to the ’90s, but with a modern twist. sixten skillfully takes elements of Americana and combines them with contemporary production tricks. Imagine atmospheric synthesizers, light synth pads, and captivating rhythms, all woven together to create something new, yet painfully familiar.
This release wouldn’t be as powerful without the participation of some of the most talented and experienced Swedish producers and songwriters. The team assembled to work on “Misemotional” brought their rich experience and fresh ideas to the project, ensuring the highest quality sound. And it shows—the songs sound like you’ve heard them before, but in a new, refreshed light.
The concept of “Misemotional” revolves around the different stages of love or loss that each of us may experience. From the passionate flames of love to the cold solitude of loneliness, this album will guide you through all the possible emotional nuances that can arise in these experiences.
The title track “Misemotional” immediately sets the tone for everything sixten is about. Tova’s airy vocals hook you from the first note, while the tender piano, soft synth pads, and a driving beat draw you into this emotional journey. Yes, the sound is bright and definitely catchy, but it also retains a warmth and a familiar feeling, as if you’re in the company of old, good friends.

Then “Losing Game” shifts to a slower, more aesthetic space. Tova’s voice flows calmly, and the guitars add that stylish touch. The chorus is effortless yet instantly captivating. A gentle melancholy settles in your heart, and the duo of Tova and Sigge Strandell gives the song a certain airiness. This track is like a soundtrack to a summer stroll, where you just walk and savor the moment. But if you’re feeling heavy-hearted, “Losing Game” is the perfect companion for emotional release.
The shift in mood becomes particularly noticeable with the tracks “Atlantic” and “4.” “Atlantic” is tenderness and airiness wrapped in soft country guitars that offer listeners a respite and a full immersion into gentle sounds. sixten skillfully mixes this country atmosphere with modern sounds, creating something truly captivating. The song has soothing vocals, a perfect arrangement, and an engaging motif that convey a need for emotional release. It’s one of the most intimate songs on the album, filled with an atmosphere of closeness. The weightless vocals and stylish arrangement with a vibrant rhythm make “Atlantic” almost cinematic, flawlessly emotional. This track has a way of evoking those deep-seated emotions that surge forth and persist. It’s a very vivid and emotional track, and without a doubt, my favorite on the release.
The next track, “Ocean In Me,” with its crisp rhythm and lower, dreamier guitars, sounds like a true release. This shift in moods underscores the conceptual nature of the entire EP.
I particularly like how in “Thrown Down,” Tova’s voice becomes more powerful and the arrangement charges with confidence. The lyrics lead the way, allowing you to feel every beat. The misty sound, quality production, and stylish riffs make “Thrown Down” the perfect track for those moments when you want to dream.
Authenticity is what makes “Misemotional” so special. Yes, it’s a commercially viable record, but at the same time, it’s music that speaks to you on a personal level. That’s what makes sixten so unique. They’re not afraid to be vulnerable and share that with the world. And that’s rare these days. So, if you’re looking for music that makes you feel alive again, that can make you nostalgic while also allowing you to enjoy a new sound, “Misemotional” is what you need. sixten is back, and judging by this release, they don’t plan on stopping.
