So, imagine this: a person standing in the shadows of the main stage, watching some rise while others fall. But when you’ve hidden backstage for so long, there comes a time when the stage itself calls you forward. Alex Uhlmann knows this call all too well. The musical director of “The Voice” in Italy, with platinum and gold awards on his shelf and memories of performing at the Olympic Stadium in Rome and the Formula 1 Grand Prix, is finally stepping into the spotlight with his debut album ‘HOME.’ The lead single “Fading Away” is already available everywhere, and this song sounds like hope. A music video is coming soon, which promises to be as touching and profound as the song itself. We managed to speak with Alex Uhlmann to find out what to expect from the new album, the stories hidden behind the tracks, and what thoughts move him as an artist.

You’ve been the musical director for The Voice Italy – what’s it like watching other artists take the stage while you’re orchestrating everything from the sidelines? Do you ever get the itch to jump up there yourself?
It’s strange sometimes and often I see younger versions of myself in the contestants that we cast. But no im quote happy bring in the background at the Programme. It’s really difficult out there to ‘make it’ as a musician, it was difficult in my days and it’s probably even harder today. What I usually look for is authenticity, if you can be original today, that’s thirty/forty percent of what you need. The rest is talent and motivation..
With a career that’s taken you from Brit-Pop venues in London to DJing for AC Milan, how does this new solo project, ‘HOME’, represent where you are now as an artist? Is it a culmination or a new beginning?
No, my solo my solo career represents my unfiltered creative output where I can musically do exactly what I feel, without thinking about market dynamics etc. I can also choose to tell difficult themes as for example in the video of Fading Away. At the same time I have a journey with my band Planet Funk, now after all these years we are like family, where the continuous creative confrontation with my companions enriches me musically and humanly…
The story behind your single Fading Away is deeply moving, especially with its connection to Irina Hordiienko’s experiences during the war in Ukraine. Can you share how her story personally affected you and influenced the song’s lyrics, mood, and overall message?
The Video of fading away tells the tragic story of Ukrainian ballet dancer Irina Hordiienko ,who was invited in February 2022 by the Ukrainian Academy of Ballet in Milan to attend a two week stage. While in Italy however, the war in Ukraine started and Irina and her mother have not been able to come home to reunite with their family. Shortly after the stage the two women, not knowing where to go or what to do, by coincidence met video director Nico Malaspina’s wife who, captured by their story decided to take them in and share her home with them ever since: This tragic story of war and separation, but also of hope, humanity and hospitality has moved me to the Point of absolutely wanting it to be told.
You’ve got a rich history with Planet Funk and have played at some iconic venues. How does performing your own material solo compare to being part of a band?
It doesn’t. It’s completely different. But as I said before I’m quite glad it is because on my solo stuff I can literally do what I want.. it’s a limitless creative output where I don’t have to think about selling out shows or streaming numbers.
You’re known for packing dancefloors, but ‘HOME’ seems to delve into more introspective themes. What was the driving force behind exploring these deeper, perhaps darker, elements in your music?
It’s where I come from and what I’ve always done. Two of my favorite artists of all time are Ryx and Damien RiceZz.
With the release of ‘HOME’ and the accompanying video for ‘Fading Away’, what’s next on the horizon? Are there any collaborations or live performances we should be keeping an eye out for?
I’m not sure to be honest. I guess it depends on how the release goes..
Your days must be packed with creative work and various responsibilities. Do you have any rituals or habits that help you stay productive and inspired?
No. I feel the only place i don’t think or am being creative is while doing sports so I need that in my life.. also to cut down on the beer belly..
Your debut album drops soon—what’s the one track on ‘HOME’ that you think fans should listen to first? And why that one?
Fading Away. It’s production and atmosphere, mostly because of the amazing string arrangement of Carmelo Patti, draws you right in.
Music has a way of capturing moments in time. If you could gift ‘HOME’ to one person who has inspired you throughout your life, who would it be and why?
It sounds a bit sad but I make music mostly for myself.. it’s something I need to do to feel good in my life.. if people like it I’m very happy, don’t get me wrong but I don’t really write for other people.
