Wah Arirang by Robert Lee is a stunning exploration of the intersection between Eastern folk music and Western jazz

“Wah Arirang” by Robert Lee – this is where music becomes a bridge between cultures. It’s an explosion, a shock, a delight – all at once. And if, like me, you didn’t expect Pansori (Korean opera) to be heard in the context of modern jazz, get ready, because you’re about to discover a new world.

The single from the album “Forbidden West” tells an entire story. Anticipation, nature, love, strength, and endurance – all of this is woven into melodies that make you think we’re somewhere between the East and the West, but not at a stagnant point on the map.

If you allow it, it’s as if jazz embraced folklore, and it turns out they not only can live in the same house, but even share the same bed. So yes, I applaud. Simply because it’s truly a masterpiece. A discovery for me. A very rare gem.
