Darkness takes on a special scent of an uncharted mystery… That’s how I would describe Quill & Blood, the third single from Sleeps Under Beams’ upcoming album, Glossed Souls.
This is their third release, offering a glimpse into the album to come. We’ve known this band for their dense, foggy soundscapes, but now they’ve taken a different path—preserving their signature whisper of darkness while weaving new shades into their sound. As I listened to Quill & Blood, it felt like the song kept shifting before my eyes, telling a different story every minute, all bound together by an eerie sense of calm. Quill & Blood is an intriguing five-minute story, as if several distinct songs have intertwined into one, forming an unusual puzzle.
Drew Campbell, a musician with a talent for multiple roles, has layered the track with fine details, allowing each element to shimmer with its own somber glow. Lisa Ann Swain, whose lyrics read like ink on ancient parchment, adds a profound depth—her metaphors form a web where every word hints at yet another abyss of meaning. And, of course, there’s Anna Rea, with her ghostly vocals that wander endlessly against a backdrop of abstract, subtly rock-infused melodies.
When Quill & Blood ends, its echo lingers in the room like a muffled moan from another reality. The urge to play it again comes naturally—to piece together the full picture and grasp where Sleeps Under Beams has led us this time. The misty atmosphere remains, but unfamiliar flashes of fresh ideas break through. And it’s in this blend of shadows and newfound colors that the magic of the upcoming album unfolds—an enigmatic glimpse behind the curtain of Glossed Souls.
