Sax Squeals, Drums Crash, Piano Burns — Carl Bagge’s Latest Is Free Jazz in Full Collapse

This new Carl Bagge single, Små lätta moln, is EIGHT minutes of pure Swedish jazz madness. It starts off slow and unassuming—piano licks smooth enough to butter toast—but a few minutes in, Jonas Kullhammar’s saxophone completely loses its mind. He goes from gentle breathy lines to full-on squawking, screeching, spiraling runs that sound like he’s exorcising a very jazzy demon.

The track spirals into a free jazz maelstrom, with the rest of the quartet following him into the storm like they’ve rehearsed the apocalypse. And when the chaos hits, it doesn’t turn into soup—it becomes this hyper-organic mesh of ideas colliding and bouncing off each other. You can tell these are seasoned pros. Nobody’s lost. Everyone’s listening. It’s madness with intent.

Honestly, it’s one of the most refreshing jazz singles I’ve heard in a minute. If you’re into the European free jazz tradition, or you just wanna hear four Swedes absolutely tear the roof off a classic melody, this one’s for you.

SCORE 8.5/10
If you like your jazz a little dangerous, Carl Bagge is straight-up must-listen.
