Jeremie Soyan Tackles Tough Truths in Debut Single ‘Cœur Wanted’

Jeremie Soyan speaks about a ‘quiet conflict’ with his parents, who would like to turn him into a ‘normal person’, about the difficult relationships with classmates and teachers at boarding school, and about his decision to follow his dream. The main strength of this track lies in its directness: the sense of alienation, and the parents’ fear in the face of their child’s dreams. This is important, because parental support helps a teenager to move forward with confidence, whereas the lack of support and the presence of fear increase the risk of being broken by hardship and a cruel environment.

The music underlines the darkness and sadness of the situation. But it should be stressed that there is no indulgence in self-pity over Jeremie’s fate. Yes, there is compassion, but thanks to the brief lyrical and sombre introduction and the faster melody that follows, the tears give way to determination. What remains is the will to confront the circumstances, to take a decision (even one that might turn life upside down) and to begin moving forward.

The melody of ‘Cœur Wanted’ is a kind of swing: at first smooth and lyrical, then suddenly shifting to a brisk rhythm with elements of rap. Credit must be given to Jeremie: all the parts – lyrics, delivery, melody, vocal dynamic, well-placed pauses – come together to create a single story that one can listen to almost endlessly.

For me, ‘Cœur Wanted’ is a discovery. The blend of fluidity and speed in its rhythm makes you want to listen and relisten again and again. And Jeremie Soyan deserves thanks for raising and presenting such difficult, relevant themes without unnecessary artistic ‘embellishment’ or an obvious attempt to boost popularity or chase fame. It is a very important and courageous work.
