Space Oddity: when you hear a title like that, you might think of the epic journeys that Vangelis described in his masterpieces. And connoisseurs of past years know that this is also the title of a song by David Bowie.
Ren Barlow has now come forward with her own reinterpretation of that “lunar” song from 1969. The result is a fully guitar-based indie rock track, but let’s go through it step by step. There’s no flute or strings here to tell us about distant worlds and civilizations.

Just guitar and Ren Barlow’s own voice, sounding light and minimalistic. At times you get the feeling that an electric guitar should be in the place of the usual acoustic one, which adds a touch of unusualness to what is otherwise a fairly typical guitar indie sound.
In the absence of other instruments, Ren Barlow makes use of perhaps the main one, her own voice. A bit of trembling here, some vocal runs there, and that’s how the necessary feelings are created, such as romance and memories.
