Night Teacher Gives Love Room to Change on “St. Augustine”

Night Teacher is the project of singer and songwriter Lilly Bechtel, whose music draws on folk and alternative rock. Her new single “St. Augustine” pairs her with Allen Tate of San Fermin, who produced the track and sings alongside her.

Their voices give the song a conversation to inhabit: close enough to meet, with space for each person to answer. Bechtel has described the song as an attempt to care deeply for someone while allowing that person room to change. It is a difficult idea to put into a love song, and the duet gives it shape.

The tenderness in their voices carries the wish to stay close; the distance between them leaves room for the possibility of parting. “St. Augustine” lingers on the courage it takes to loosen your hold while the feeling is still there. Bechtel and Tate make that uncertainty the center of the song, and their shared performance lets it remain unresolved.
