Ellie Benn began performing as a teenage busker and played Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe at sixteen. That early introduction to American songwriting has stayed with the German singer-songwriter, whose music draws on folk, country and pop.
Her latest single, “Mayflowers,” grew out of a stay in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, with British producer Sam Hinds helping bring the song to record. It’s a fitting combination for an artist who has built her work around experiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

The interesting thing about “Mayflowers” is its sense of scale. Benn approaches the place through personal impressions, giving the song the intimacy of a remembered visit. Americana suits that approach: a voice, a setting and the emotional associations that gather around them can carry considerable weight. Here, the appeal lies in how closely those elements belong together. The Southern setting is part of the song’s actual history, which gives its atmosphere a concrete starting point.
