Singer-songwriter Olai wrote “Stories From The Streets” while working on Melbourne’s streets. The people he encountered became the reason for the song, and I appreciate the outward focus. Other people’s lives deserve room in songwriting, especially when the writer has spent time among them.
What catches my interest here is the distance between seeing someone regularly and understanding their circumstances. Understanding takes considerably more effort. Olai’s decision to return to those encounters in his writing suggests they stayed with him.

I find that a worthwhile subject for a song. A city means something different to everyone living in it, and everyday contact offers a glimpse of those differences. “Stories From The Streets” gives that contact a purpose beyond the moment itself. Its appeal, for me, begins with a songwriter paying attention to the people around him.
