Denver songwriter Meghan Foley started writing at eight and performing in Chicago’s Irish pubs at twelve. Following years in Los Angeles with CORA, she now fronts Meghan Foley & the Nightblooms.
“Oldest Daughter” addresses the pressure placed on someone expected to hold everything together. Foley has called the release particularly personal, and its subject carries plenty of emotional friction: being dependable earns affection, then gradually becomes a permanent assignment.

That’s the part that interests me. Pride in looking after people can sit beside exhaustion, resentment and the wish that somebody else would take charge for an afternoon. The song’s pop-rock approach gives that private frustration a fitting outlet. Its premise also allows affection to remain complicated. Loving your family and reaching the limits of your patience belong in the same conversation. Foley chooses a subject capable of starting that conversation, particularly among listeners accustomed to being everyone’s first phone call.
