L’VON is a Baltimore based electronic pop artist who grew up outside Atlanta. Their work draws on their experience of being Black, queer and gender nonconforming in rural Georgia. On “God Is A DJ,” they bring that history to the dance floor and claim the space with a grin.
The song borrows the language of worship for a night of attraction and dancing. The DJ gets the title, the lights draw everyone’s eyes upward, and L’VON delivers the punchline with “gay man.” It is cheeky, horny and entirely aware of the rules it is playing with. The hook keeps circling back to the DJ, turning a private rush of confidence into something a room can shout together.
